Legal Services

Sanctuary staff members who serve as victim advocates are able to explain the legal options available to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Their help is confidential and free of charge.

These individuals are not lawyers, but they are able to explain the choices you have, help you understand the court process, provide emotional support, and go with you when you deal with attorneys, law enforcement officials, or court officials.

A victim advocate is present in District and Family Court in Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Livingston, Lyon, Muhlenburg, Todd, and Trigg counties.

Sanctuary's legal advocates can help you when you want to:

  • Know what legal action you can take when you have been assaulted
  • Petition the court to issue a protective order
  • Petition the court to change a protective order
  • Report a violation of a protective order
  • File criminal charges

Who is appropriate for referral?

  • Any victim of domestic violence and/or sexual assault

If Sanctuary's advocate is unable to provide the help you need, referrals will be made to other resources.
