Suggestions for Recovery

People who are raped or sexually assaulted may have many of the following reactions.  Remember, these are normal and in most cases will be temporary.

FEAR - possibly panic, anxiety, fears of being alone or in certain places or situations

ANGER - possibly rage, irritability, alienation from family or friends

DEPRESSION - may include crying, withdrawal, or isolation

PHYSICAL REACTIONS - may include nausea, headaches, changes in eating, sleeping, or changes in the menstrual cycle

You may feel dirty, ashamed, guilty, humiliated, or responsible.  You may experience mood swings, behavior changes, or an inability to concentrate or relax.

Remember, the rapist is the guilty person. It is not your fault.

Realize that your reactions are normal.  Give yourself time to heal; it won't happen overnight.

Talk about your feelings with someone you trust.

Avoid using drugs or alcohol to help you handle your feelings.

Try to prepare yourself for the difficult times, such as court, anniversaries, etc.

Look for support and understanding.  Learn about your rights as a victim of crime.
